With a background in modern linguistics (Leiden University), I have been a language teacher and writing coach since 1981.
I plunged into the world of science writing in 2002, and nowadays the research paper is my single focus. To achieve this, I had to minimize my other activities – general writing courses for government institutions and municipalities – and transfer them to my network colleagues. The only exception I make at this point is my practice as ‘writing doctor’ of the CPB (Centraal Planbureau): too much fun to say goodbye to!
Teaching science writing is a great job. I love the variety of topics in my course, the linguistic levels of a research paper, the attitude of my Ph.D. students, and the challenging atmosphere within the scientific community.
Since April 2016 my course Writing a Scientific Paper also runs online. Moderating the online course is a real pleasure for me. I discovered that relating to the group and sharing of thoughts can be as inspiring as in the real-life classes.
